Over the last 50 to 100 years, Madagascar has suffered greatly from the cutting and burning of it's forests to clear land for farming and cattle. Wood is used to build houses, make canoes and produce charcoal. The country has lost over 75% of it's forested areas and now lemurs and other incredible species are increasingly restricted to isolated fragments. Durrell's work in Madagascar focuses on working with people to reduce the pressures on remaining forest and wetland areas to improve their well-being and to save species from extinction.
